Originally with a value set at one pound (20 shillings), the guinea was minted between 1663 and 1814 in Great Britain and contained approximately one-quarter of a troy ounce of gold. The name "Guinea" comes from the fact that the west coast of Africa—known then as "Guinea"—provided the majority of the gold for the struck coins. The fluctuating price of gold relative to silver eventually caused fluctuations in the value of the guinea, but it was eventually set in 1717 at one poind one shilling. Following the Napoleonic Wars and the Great Recoinage of 1816, the pound became the major unit of currency, and the guinea coin itself was replaced by the sovereign. However, the term still exists in posh British circles, especially in the field of horses, with the term "guinea" being equivalent to 21 shillings (£1.05).
