Now that the encore presentation of the Tournament of Champions is complete, our encore presentations move on to the 3rd Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament. Our first of six quarterfinals in this event features Matt Amodio, Drew Basile, and Karen Farrell.
This tournament also debuted a new format for a Trebek/Jennings-era tournament: the 9 semifinalists will consist of the six quarterfinal winners and three wildcards (the highest-scoring non-winners), a significant change from the previous "5 games/4 wildcards" system. I still believe that it will take either a runaway game or a correct response in Final Jeopardy in order to advance, which should adjust the wagering in ways nobody was 100% certain of entering this tournament. Thus, if you see a contestant make an unusual wager in this round, know that it was probably informed by a change in how wildcards have been apportioned.
Here's the thing about the general discourse within the Jeopardy! community. It's very much a result of the bandwagon effect. You have very impressionable diehard fans of the show, both young and old, who see someone that they respect carry a certain opinion about the show (regardless of what that opinion is), and many of those fans have difficulty when it comes to regulating their emotions. Because of that lack of self-regulation, it becomes their entire personality to make posts and comments in various outlets amplifying that opinion. (Generally, it's because they don't like the modern expansion of the show's various spin-offs and postseason direction, but there are people like this on both sides of the argument.) And, of course, there are tabloid websites for whom "controversy = revenue" who are happy to amplify these people further. It is also my experience that there is a subset of Americans who think that every time the results of an event don't go exactly how they expect—whether that is a Steelers–Chiefs game where they think Patrick Mahomes gets too many favorable calls, or when Paolo Pasco beats Scott Riccardi in the Tournament of Champions—that it is somehow rigged. Do you know what we call those people up here in Canada? Crackpots.

Since 1988, Gibraltar has issued its own coinage; although they are accepted at par with the British pound, it is only legal tender within Gibraltar. Its coinage, denominated at £0.01, £0.02, £0.05, £0.10, £0.20, £0.50, £1.00, and £2.00, have featured many local landmarks and local wildlife, including the Rock of Gibraltar and the Barbary macaque, among others.
I thought this was a relatively straightforward Final Jeopardy clue to start the event.

- Ken made zero mention of wildcards whatsoever in today's episode; I'm particularly surprised by this—you'd think a runaway game in the first quarterfinal would have been a perfect time to make that reminder for the audience at home.
