The Tournament of Champions is over, and as we move into Olympic season, the Jeopardy! universe moves into what amounts to its Olympic counterprogramming: the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament. Our first of six quarterfinals in this event features Matt Amodio, Drew Basile, and Karen Farrell. As I said in my preview published earlier this morning, this is actually one of the stronger quarterfinals (but not the strongest of the six—I think that’s going to be tomorrow’s game), which should hopefully start this tournament off on a solid note. One interesting note for those who watch both the Daytime rerun and the regular game: if I’m not mistaken, Drew Basile’s semifinal game will air in Daytime today as well, so you’ll get to see him twice today.
This tournament also debuts a new format for a Trebek/Jennings-era tournament: the 9 semifinalists will consist of the six quarterfinal winners and three wildcards (the highest-scoring non-winners), a significant change from the previous “5 games/4 wildcards” system. I still believe that it will take either a runaway game or a correct response in Final Jeopardy in order to advance, which should adjust the wagering in ways nobody was 100% certain of entering this tournament. Thus, if you see a contestant make an unusual wager in this round, know that it was probably informed by a change in how wildcards have been apportioned.
Also, for those viewers who watch Jeopardy! on an NBC local station, the Olympics, whose opening ceremonies are on Friday, will see widespread preemptions over the duration of the Games. As always, Matt Carberry has released a Google sheet detailing the schedule changes, or make sure to check your local TV listings. Of note is that WTVA in the Tupelo, Mississippi area will be airing the games at 4:30 AM Central beginning tomorrow. For the duration of the Olympics, the version of this post without results will be posted at 8:00 AM Eastern, with results posted at some point between 9:00 and 10:00 Eastern, in order for my regulars to have an opportunity to test themselves on Final Jeopardy as they usually might, with results postings being dependent upon my own morning schedule. Today’s game, however, is scheduled to air at its usual time in all markets.

Correct response: What is Gibraltar?

Since 1988, Gibraltar has issued its own coinage; although they are accepted at par with the British pound, it is only legal tender within Gibraltar. Its coinage, denominated at £0.01, £0.02, £0.05, £0.10, £0.20, £0.50, £1.00, and £2.00, have featured many local landmarks and local wildlife, including the Rock of Gibraltar and the Barbary macaque, among others.
I thought this was a relatively straightforward Final Jeopardy clue to start the event—if all six are like this, the scores are going to get very high in this round!

Game Recap:
The Amodio Rodeo picked up where it left off last time, with Matt getting a couple dozen correct responses, meaning he could cruise to a runaway despite an incorrect Daily Double. Karen Farrell had a strong end of Double Jeopardy to take second place after both she and Drew Basile doubled up in Final Jeopardy. Drew probably won’t have a high enough score to advance, while I suspect Karen might have a stressful time in the audience waiting to see if that score pans out for a wild card!

(Although I did think I saw him mouth “wild card” in the closing chat.)
