(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today's Jeopardy! contestants:

Mariah Stovall, a literary agent & novelist from Newark, New Jersey
Frank Merchlewitz, a senior digital producer from Robbinsdale, Minnesota
Eileen Goodwin, a research scientist from Boston, Massachusetts

Eileen enters today's game as a 1-day champion with winnings of $8,401.

Andy's Pregame Thoughts:

After a game yesterday where the material—especially in Double Jeopardy—was one of those times where it didn't quite play to the strengths of the three contestants, Eileen Goodwin returns as champion with winnings of $8,401. Today, your challengers are Frank Merchlewitz and Mariah Stovall.

As for weekend content, I have a lot to discuss on Sunday's episode of Jeopartalk, whose Sunday night recording will be pushed back an hour to 7:00 PM Eastern because of a scheduling conflict with an Online Quiz League match. If you want notifications, all of the recordings are livestreamed on both Twitch and YouTube. As always, if any of my friends or contestants want to take part, let me know—I can be contacted via any route you have for me, and there is an email contact for me in my About page as well.

And in terms of other important parts of YouTube, Jeopardy! announced yesterday afternoon that there will be a second episode of Jeopardy! YouTube Edition on Thursday, October 22 at 9:00 PM Eastern, featuring well-known content creators Angela Giarratana, Michelle Khare, and Mythical Chef Josh Scherer. (I know that the excitement might not be there amongst the show's older average viewer, but I assure you that the people in my friend group—who normally take just a passing interest in the show—are incredibly excited for Thursday.)

Correct response: What are beach reads?

More Information About Final Jeopardy!:

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2026 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

The term "beach read" has been around since the 1990s, to signify either "a usually light work of escapist fiction (such as a thriller or romance), or "any enjoyable or accessible book considered suitable for reading while on vacation" (according to Merriam-Webster itself). In 2019, New York magazine's profile of the successful Hilderbrand referred to her as "queen of beach reads".

Now, here's the thing: I've already seen criticisms of today's Final Jeopardy clue. I would contend that such criticism isn't valid, and quite frankly borders on misogynistic. "Beach read" may not be the sort of term that an older male would encounter, but it is absolutely a ubiquitous term in the literary world to refer to the sorts of novels perfect to read while on vacation at the beach. Jeopardy! needs to cater to everybody, and that includes today's Final Jeopardy clue.

In terms of how today's Final Jeopardy will play? Mariah is being introduced as a "literary agent & novelist". On the one hand, this is probably well within her professional wheelhouse. On the other, she may also suffer from the curse of too much knowledge—Jeopardy! clues are often written to most benefit those with superficial knowledge of a subject, and having too much knowledge often means trying to determine what the show is going for when too many potential options come to mind.

Looking to find out who won Jeopardy! today? Today's results will be posted once the show airs!
