Today's Jeopardy! contestants:

Mariah Stovall, a literary agent & novelist from Newark, New Jersey
Frank Merchlewitz, a senior digital producer from Robbinsdale, Minnesota
Eileen Goodwin, a research scientist from Boston, Massachusetts

Eileen enters today's game as a 1-day champion with winnings of $8,401.Andy's Pregame Thoughts:

After a game yesterday where the material—especially in Double Jeopardy—was one of those times where it didn't quite play to the strengths of the three contestants, Eileen Goodwin returns as champion with winnings of $8,401. Today, your challengers are Frank Merchlewitz and Mariah Stovall.

As for weekend content, I have a lot to discuss on Sunday's episode of Jeopartalk, whose Sunday night recording will be pushed back an hour to 7:00 PM Eastern because of a scheduling conflict with an Online Quiz League match. If you want notifications, all of the recordings are livestreamed on both Twitch and YouTube. As always, if any of my friends or contestants want to take part, let me know—I can be contacted via any route you have for me, and there is an email contact for me in my About page as well.

And in terms of other important parts of YouTube, Jeopardy! announced yesterday afternoon that there will be a second episode of Jeopardy! YouTube Edition on Thursday, October 22 at 9:00 PM Eastern, featuring well-known content creators Angela Giarratana, Michelle Khare, and Mythical Chef Josh Scherer. (I know that the excitement might not be there amongst the show's older average viewer, but I assure you that the people in my friend group—who normally take just a passing interest in the show—are incredibly excited for Thursday.)

Correct response: What are beach reads?

More Information About Final Jeopardy!:

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2026 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

The term "beach read" has been around since the 1990s, to signify either "a usually light work of escapist fiction (such as a thriller or romance), or "any enjoyable or accessible book considered suitable for reading while on vacation" (according to Merriam-Webster itself). In 2019, New York magazine's profile of the successful Hilderbrand referred to her as "queen of beach reads".

Now, here's the thing: I've already seen criticisms of today's Final Jeopardy clue. I would contend that such criticism isn't valid, and quite frankly borders on misogynistic. "Beach read" may not be the sort of term that an older male would encounter, but it is absolutely a ubiquitous term in the literary world to refer to the sorts of novels perfect to read while on vacation at the beach. Jeopardy! needs to cater to everybody, and that includes today's Final Jeopardy clue.

In terms of how today's Final Jeopardy will play? Mariah is being introduced as a "literary agent & novelist". On the one hand, this is probably well within her professional wheelhouse. On the other, she may also suffer from the curse of too much knowledge—Jeopardy! clues are often written to most benefit those with superficial knowledge of a subject, and having too much knowledge often means trying to determine what the show is going for when too many potential options come to mind.

Game Recap & Tonight's Game Stats:

Looking to find out who won Jeopardy! today? Here's the Friday, October 16, 2026 Jeopardy! by the numbers, along with a recap:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Classic Novels; Care For A Beverage?; Flowers & Plants; You Totally Played Yourself!; "No"; Man Is An Island)

Thanks to a couple of incorrect responses from Frank, Mariah led at the first break. Frank found the Daily Double, though. After 15 clues, the scores were Mariah $2,800 Frank $2,600 Eileen $800.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Mariah 4 correct 1 incorrect
Frank 5 correct 2 incorrect
Eileen 4 correct 2 incorrect

Today's interviews:

Mariah wrote a novel about the punk music scene.
Frank is airing very close to his wife's due date.
Eileen was a big fan of Star Trek episodes featuring infectious diseases.

Frank took the lead in the second half of the round, although all three players struggled with giving responses that otherwise could have been correct, if not for the fact that they didn't fit the constraints of the category. On the opening board, Eileen got 3 in classic novels and "No", Frank got 4 of the beverages, and Mariah got 3 in playing herself.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Frank 10 correct 3 incorrect
Mariah 6 correct 3 incorrect
Eileen 9 correct 3 incorrect

Scores after the Jeopardy! Round:

Frank $4,800
Mariah $2,800
Eileen $2,800

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Commission Accomplished; 2-Letter Words; It's The Ancient Law; As Tech Goes By; National Mottos; 2001: A Face Odyssey)

Frank split the Daily Doubles with a pair of $3,000 wagers; very interestingly, though, we had a situation with second place at exactly 50% of the lead for the second time this week, with Mariah in second and Frank leading.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Frank 24 correct 7 incorrect
Mariah 11 correct 5 incorrect
Eileen 13 correct 4 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 3 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Frank $14,400
Mariah $7,200
Eileen $6,800

Eileen—just short of being in score contention—was the only player correct in Final Jeopardy, which means that Frank is your new champion as a result of his lead entering Final Jeopardy. He'll be back on Monday to defend his title.

Tonight's results:

Eileen $6,800 + $500 = $7,300 (What is the beach read?)
Mariah $7,200 - $7,200 = $0 (What is Marthas Vineyard)
Frank $14,400 - $50 = $14,350 (What is Romantasy?) (1-day total: $14,350)
