We have a new champion on Jeopardy! in Justin Robbins of South Carolina, who won $20,001 yesterday in near-runaway fashion. Today, he faces off against challengers Jareesa Tucker McClure and Dominic Lloyd. In yesterday's game, Justin cleared the ever-rarer 40 attempt mark, thanks to boxscores published by the show, which bodes well for his potentially going on a bit of a win streak. Another good sign for Justin is that he had 9 "net correct responses" (correct minus incorrect) in the bottom two rows of the board in yesterday's game; a deep knowledge base can often make up for issues with the signaling device.

If you were one of the many sports fans hoping to get on ESPN Jeopardy! but couldn't in Season 1 because the initial season was celebrities-only, Season 2 has been announced—and this season is for civilians. Major League Baseball is causing preemptions in some markets this week, with games scheduled for 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM Eastern on NBC. Thus, if you watch the show on an NBC-affiliated local station, you might see preemptions. There are scheduled preemptions in many markets in the Central, Mountain, and Pacific time zones—check your local listings or Matt Carberry's Google sheet for more information. If the 2:00 game goes into a significant number of extra innings, there may end up being unscheduled preemptions (thanks to broadcast rules that have surrounded sporting events since the late 1960s.)

Correct response: Who is Jefferson Davis?

More Information About Final Jeopardy!:

Due to the fact that the original art for the Statue of Freedom atop the United States Capitol dome contained a liberty cap—then known as the old Roman symbol of an emancipated slave—Jefferson Davis (best known for being the President of the Confederate States of America—vetoed the statue until its headdress was changed. When the statue was completed, it contained a military helmet and not the Roman liberty cap.

I enjoyed today's Final Jeopardy! clue; it's just another way that the writers like to remind America about its history. Thus, in terms of why trivia questions get asked, today's definitely falls within the "this is something you need to know about or be reminded about" basket, regardless of how it plays with contestants or viewers.

Andy's Thoughts:

Even had Dominic not gone all-in, but bet an extra $1,000 on DD3, he would have found himself in a much more favorable position entering Final Jeopardy today.

It seems like Justin is the kind of person who learned things by reading about them and not about hearing them, and that's perfectly valid.
