This 1982 no. 1 hit was inspired by "Splendor in the Grass", a classic film about the failed expectations of teens Wilma & Bud

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today's Jeopardy! contestants:

Anne Benjaminson, a foreign service officer originally from New York, New York
Nishi Kantamneni, a platform engineer originally from Pleasanton, California
Tristan Williams, a data scientist originally from Lincoln, Nebraska

Tristan enters today's game as a 6-day champion with winnings of $113,699.

Andy's Pregame Thoughts:

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2026 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

John Mellencamp (performing as John Cougar when he released the song in 1982) wrote his #1 hit song "Jack & Diane", about "two American kids growing up in the heartland" after watching the classic movie Splendor in the Grass, as writes "Sound on Sound" and Indiana Public Media. Regardless of his inspiration, though, it was the biggest hit of his 1982 album American Fool, and should be a massively straightforward clue for a significant swath of our viewing audience, who would have heard this clue on classic rock radio thousands of times over the years.

Looking to find out who won Jeopardy! today? Here's the Saturday, October 31, 2026 Jeopardy! by the numbers, along with a recap:

Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Eye On Asia; Warning-Worthy Weather; Ambrose Bierce's Devil's Dictionary; Small Business; A Last Time For Everything; The End Of The Reality Show)

It was challenger Anne who got off to a strong start in this one; although the Daily Double was still to be found in the second half, the scores after 15 were Anne $3,800 Nishi $1,600 Tristan $1,000.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Anne 5 correct 1 incorrect
Nishi 3 correct 0 incorrect
Tristan 2 correct 1 incorrect

Today's interviews:

Anne is currently posted in Vietnam; it's the sixth country that she's worked in.
Nishi started watching the show in elementary school.
Tristan won a month-long trip to Germany in high school.

It was Tristan who eventually found the Daily Double, pretty late in the round; his correct response gave him the lead through 30. On the opening board, Anne went 3/5 in small business and Tristan went 3/5 in the last time for things.

Statistics after the Jeopardy round:

Tristan 8 correct 1 incorrect
Anne 11 correct 2 incorrect

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: It's All History; Book Recommendations; In The Nick Of Time; Travel & Tourism; She Directed It; Good Hang)

Things got very interesting five clues into Double Jeopardy when Tristan lost $5,000 on a Daily Double. While the last Daily Double allowed him to recover $3,000, it was a rare non-runaway for Tristan entering Final Jeopardy. Tristan did go 3/5 in that history category, though.

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Tristan 19 correct 5 incorrect
Anne 18 correct 6 incorrect
Nishi 7 correct 0 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 11 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Tristan $12,200
Anne $9,600
Nishi $4,400

Tristan was the only player correct in Final Jeopardy, putting the exclamation point on win #7. He'll look to pick up win #8 in next weekend's encore presentation against Chayce Griffith and Valerie Fulton.

Tonight's results:

Nishi $4,400 - $2,700 = $1,700 (What is idk but thanks for having me!! Shoutout to my fam)
Anne $9,600 - $9,600 = $0 (What is Summer of 6)
