In Italy's Valle del Diavolo (Devil's Valley) near Larderello, the world's first geothermal power plant began operation in the 1910s, after Prince Piero Ginori Conti successfully lit four lightbulbs with a geothermal power generator seven years prior, harnessing the power of steam. The fumaroles in the area are said to have inspired Dante's vision of Hell in his works, specifically his Divine Comedy series. While geothermal power itself is only thought to be able to meet 3 to 5% of worldwide energy demand by 2050, it can be an important renewable source of energy in those areas that can support it.
