So the poll is complete. I am a teeny bit surprised no one said “no.” I did but at least on my computer it doesn’t show up. I figured I was not the only one who’d rather have waited as long as it took until (s)he was going to win. I’d have done it again, the same way that is, as long as I was going to die or otherwise be permanently ineligible before I could take the test again. And that didn’t happen. 🙂
Sometimes I see an episode and think, That was such a pleasure. This was one. Will Adam make the ToC list today?

Adam Holquist

Diane Mezzanotte

Brad Tytel
(The Jeopardy! site says “Bradley”!)

I swept the no-brain-required Stock Symbol Shopping to start out the game. Adam was off to a fast start too. He’d gotten 9 right by the first break and had 4800. Brad had gotten 4 right and one wrong and had 2800. Diane had gotten 2 right and one wrong and had 600. It’s nice to see all 3 contestants active from the first clue.
Brad found the Daily Double of the round, in Monarchs of England. There were 2 clues in the round after this one. Brad had gotten 3 right since the break and one wrong, and had 3200. I believe Adam had gotten 5 right and one wrong, and had 6600. Diane had gotten one right and had 800. Mr. Trebek said Brad was in a “prime position to get very close to the lead.” Brad should keep in mind the first 2 clues in the category were easy ones. Brad wagered 1200. This was the clue: “The one with the second-longest reign.” I was chuffed that I got this one right. So did Brad. He, presumably, was chuffed too.
Adam got the last 2 right in the round, giving him 8400.
Diane got the first 3 right in Double Jeopardy (there was a triple-stumper though amid those). Adam got this last one, and I was impressed considering he’d said he’d never been to Europe. The category is “Windy” Talk. Mr. Trebek prefaced this with “Careful now…”: “A proper British bug would get squished on this.”
Who knew there were enough “Bela”s to make a category of the same name? And I couldn’t believe this was a triple-stumper: “He coached gymnasts Nadia Comaneci & Mary Lou Retton to Olympic titles.”
Adam found the first Daily Double of the round, in General Science. He’d gotten 6 right and one wrong so far, and had 12800. Brad had gotten one right and had 4800. Diane had gotten 5 right and had 6000. Adam must’ve felt confident; he wagered 5000 on this softball: “Since limestone is transformed into marble under severe heat, marble is classified as this type of rock.” Adam got it right too.
He also found the next Daily Double in the round, in On the Greek Deity’s Resume. He’d gotten 3 right since his last Daily Double and had 23000. Brad had gotten one right and one wrong, and had 3600. Diane had also gotten one right and one wrong, and had 5200. Ouch. Adam wagered another 5000 on this clue: “Awards and Honors: 400s B.C. — The Parthenon dedicated to me, wisely.” Adam got it right! Double ouch. I’d have needed a lot more time, and even then no guarantees. Mr. Trebek gave the less-than-a-minute warning at this time.
Not that it matters of course, but I bet the boardies on the, well, message boards are screaming about Brad’s response of “Dionosus” being accepted for this one in On the Greek Deity’s Resume: “E-mail address: wine_and ariadne_lover@party-on.god.”
Three clues, sadly, were left covered in this round. I can’t really tell why. It seems like the first time that’s happened in a while. Adam ended the round with 30400. He’d gotten 2 right since his last Daily Double. Brad got one right and one wrong, and had 3600. Diane still had 5200. Mr. Trebek said what may be, in my opinion, the coldest thing he ever has (and there’ve been plenty). First he pointed out the lead of more than 25000, then added, “It’s gonna be interesting to see…how much he wagers in Final Jeopardy.” The category was World Cities. This was the clue: “Founded in 1521, 44 years before St. Augustine, Fla., it’s the oldest city est. by Europeans on what is now U.S. territory.” I got this right immediately, and I don’t know if I should admit it but I thought I had it wrong when Mr. Trebek mentioned the Caribbean. Brad got this one wrong (Santa Fe?) and lost 1700. Boardies must be screaming again about Diane’s non-existent guess. (Okay, I don’t like to do this but here’s a link to the thread.) Diane lost 2000. Adam didn’t need to have been to Europe to get this one right. He added a whopping 9600. I’d have wagered nothing, but I still like this guy. He’s steady. And I didn’t notice til the end of this episode, but he looks a little like Jason Zollinger!
As much as I loved this episode, my Coryat’s been better: only 18400 today (24400 without negs). It’s funny, I felt like all my negs were “good” ones. For example, this one in Adam Sandler Films by Role: “2008: An Israeli special forces-soldier turned-New York hair stylist.” I said what Brad did and was shocked when it was wrong. Then I said what Diane did on this one in General Science, but it would’ve been a clam for me if Brad hadn’t said what he did first: “Most sponge skeletons consist of either calcium carbonate or this glasslike material.” And it was worth 2000, widening an already-huge gap for Adam!
