Our encore presentations continue this weekend with Alex DeFrank going for his third victory against Lily St. Laurent and David DeBacker.

I know I spoke a couple of weeks ago about how shocked I was that Jamie Hare didn’t receive a Second Chance selection. But I think we can say much the same about David. Here we have a player who held a ToCer to a game that wasn’t a runaway, was a correct response in Final Jeopardy away from winning the game, had 40 attempts, $5,000 on a Daily Double, and 20 correct responses—and even that wasn’t enough. To be quite honest, after a stat line such as this one, any pundit or any Facebook/Reddit commenter who claims that any player whatsoever is a lock for Second Chance at this point is essentially putting undue expectations on nonwinning contestants—there are more incredible performances than there are Second Chance spots, and it’s going to leave otherwise very worthy players without an invitation.

In one of those things that gives a TV setting realism, but isn’t really noticed unless you’re playing close attention, the sign “Maximum room capacity 75 persons” hung above the entrance door to the title location of the classic TV sitcom Cheers.

I do think it’s interesting that this—another piece of nostalgia for the older viewership of the show—is the Final Jeopardy this weekend, especially in juxtaposition with yesterday’s Final Jeopardy in the first-run games. Also, remember how this one played—a Triple Stumper—compared to how straightforward many of the home viewers found the clue.

Game Recap:

I’ve certainly made allusions to how this game went in the previous two sections of my writing. However, both Alex and David had more than 20 correct and healthy-sized Daily Double wagers in Double Jeopardy to ensure this was a very hotly contested game entering Final Jeopardy. As I also alluded, though, Final Jeopardy was a Triple Stumper, with both Alex and David guessing M*A*S*H instead of Cheers. However, Alex’s crush-sized lead entering Final Jeopardy was enough to see him through this one as he picked up win #3.

Next week’s encore presentation will see a full “Battle of the A’s” as Alex DeFrank takes on Ann Velenchik and Adam Silverman in an attempt to pick up victory #4.
