I started out sweeping The Short Form. And I must admit I say “deets.”
At the first break, Nishanth had gotten 6 right and one wrong, and had 2800. Laura had gotten 2 right and 2 wrong and was in the hole 600. Forrest had gotten 4 right and 2 wrong and had 200.
My first time through, I thought Forrest said he had 6 or 7 books out of the library right now, and I wondered why the audience laughed. He said in the 60s or 70s! Even I’m not that bad. One time I asked the librarian after a fruitful visit how many books I could check out. He eyed my stack and said “More than that.” He added it would be more than I could carry before it was too many.
Laura then answered the next 3 in Literary Characters and found the Daily Double of the round there. She had 600 then, and wagered all of it on this: “The pawnbroker Alyona Ivanovna & her sister Lizaveta are murdered with an ax in this novel.” She smiled immediately and got it.
At the end of the round, Nishanth had gotten 6 right after Laura’s Daily Double and had 6800. Laura had gotten 4 right and one wrong and had 3000. Forrest still had 200.
Nishanth found the first Daily Double of Double Jeopardy in . He’d gotten 4 right so far in the round and had 11600. Laura had gotten 3 right and had 5500. Forrest had gotten 2 right and had 1800. He wagered 1400 on this clue in Portrait of the Artist’s Mother: “Noted as a painter of moms and kids, this American impressionist showed her own mom with the grandkids.”
Nishanth and I got it right.
I got this triple-stumper handily, in Innovation: “A new Antarctic base slides across ice on skis operated by this type of power that applies fluid mechanics.”
The next-to-last clue in Double Jeopardy was the other Daily Double. Laura found it in River Run, She’d gotten 6 right since Nishanth’s Daily Double and had 13400. Nishanth had gotten 8 right and 2 wrong and had 21800. Forrest had gotten 3 right and had 3400. Laura wagered 4000 on this clue: “From the Rockies to the Gulf, between Brownsville & Matamoros.” I thought this was cinchy but Laura missed it. Only one more clue, and Laura got it at the last second! She had 11400 then going into the Final. The category was Famous Names in Transportation, and this was the clue: “In 1928, a year after making international headlines, it reached its final destination, the Smithsonian.” I thought this one was cinchy too. Forrest and Nishanth got it, making Nishanth a semifinalist. Forrest added 3395. Laura lost 5500 and Nishanth added 1001. And if you thought Alex Trebek was short, get a load of this:
