I got caught up on GSN Jeopardy!s the other night . Now, there used to be a guy on the J! message boards who’d post his Coryat as well as what it would’ve been with no negs. I wondered why he did that – I think it makes him look worse rather than better. I see where he’s coming from though. That said, I have yet to see any helpful advice on how to reduce negs, and everyone seems to have fewer negs than I do. I know they say “Don’t guess,” but many of my right answers are guesses, too. (And boy did it bug me today.) So, what are your suggestions? I really want to reduce my negs.
And by the way, does anyone else play these GSN episodes?

Since I hunt for the contestants to see if they will answer questions for me, I know that Rachel is a “Nashville Christian Women’s Examiner.” (I also see that she attended Christian high school and played on the quiz bowl team.) I don’t know what that is, and I’m a Christian (Catholic) but that sounds a little scary. I’m guessing Claudia didn’t know that when she went straight to a Bible category (Big Plays in the Bible) Not that it mattered. Claudia swept, as did I. She knew a thing or two about it, too!
Were you guys a little surprised at the spelling of Compact Disks?
Terry found the Daily Double of the Jeopardy round in Mountain Ranges, before the first break. He had 400 (2 right and 1 neg), Claudia had 3600 (7 right), and Rachel had 1800 (3 right and 1 neg). Terry wagered 1000 on this clue: “The Rhodope Mountains are one of the most rugged parts of this peninsula.”
He missed it. This was the last clue before the first break.
As I said, I clammed on several clues I would’ve had right, in an attempt to reduce my negs. The first came in Mountain Ranges (for 1000, no less!): “A range of the Leinster chain, the Wicklow Mountains of this country rise to smoothly rounded peaks like Lugnaquilla.”
I said “barbell” instead of the correct response on this one in It’s All in the Package: “Jin Le designed a bottle shaped like & named for this type of free weight; fill it with your sports drink & lift, or sip away.”
At the first break, Terry had 2000 (7 right and 1 neg since his Daily Double), Claudia had 6800 (4 right and 1 neg), and Rachel had 2200 (3 right and 1 neg).
Here’s another one I didn’t pull the trigger on, trying not to neg (in A Sense of Entitlement Programs, and for 2000!!): “Under welfare reform, TANF has replaced AFDC; the F in both stands for these.” Terry found the first Daily Double of the round in this category. Each contestant had 1 right and no negs since the round began. Terry had 2400, Claudia had 8800, and Rachel had 2600. Terry wagered it all on this clue: “In the 1930s, Alf Landon called this government program ‘a cruel hoax.'” He got it right!
The next one I clammed on even though the right response would’ve been my guess, in The Other Woman (and for 2000!!! And I’d’ve eventually swept the category!): “Barbra Streisand shared Best Actress Oscar honors for 1968 with this legendary thespian.” I was very surprised this was a triple-stumper, in the same category: “Chaka Khan’s version of ‘I’m Every Woman’ went to No. 21; in 1993 this other woman took it to No. 4.”
I didn’t ring on this one in Keeping Up With the Carolingians even though the right response would’ve been my guess (I hope you’re not sick of these!): For 400: “The name Carolingian derives from the large number of family members who bore this name, still in the top 100.”
I knew this response in Oh, “K” thanks to all those J! reruns I watched: “This type of doll represents a Hopi ancestral spirit.” And I got this triple-stumper in Keeping Up With the Carolingians: “The empire came to have 3 parts: Francia Occidentalis, Francia Media, & Francia this.”
Terry found the next Daily Double in Science Grab Bag. He had 13600 because his response of “Kokopelli” to the doll clue in the previous category was accepted at that time. He’d had 5 right with no negs, then, since his last Daily Double. Claudia had 14000 (6 right and 1 neg), and Rachel had 3400 (2 right and 1 neg). Terry boldly wagered it all on this clue: “Of the 10 listings on the Mohs scale, one of the 2 that end in ‘z.'” I cringed when Terry said “zirconia,” then “zircon.”
Terry continued to dive for the higher-value clues. There were 7 clues left when Mr. Trebek gave the less-than-a-minute warning. After the Daily Double, Rachel got 4 right and moved up to 8200. Claudia negged once and had 12400. Unfortunately Terry negged once, on the last clue of the round, and was 1200 in the hole at the end. There were 2 clues left unseen.
The Final Jeopardy category was Africa. This was the clue: “Very different places, the first 2 African nations to gain independence from a European power were Egypt & this one.” Both Claudia and Rachel got it right. Rachel wagered it all, while Claudia wagered enough to beat Rachel in that case. We’ll see Claudia tomorrow! If she wins, she needs to earn roughly 27000 if she were to pass Beau
on the ToC list. Do you think she can do it?
My Coryat today was 22200. It would’ve been 27600 if I’d rang in on those mentioned above, and 25800 with no negs.
Tomorrow, I get to see “bpmod” (Brian O’Donnell) of the Jeopardy! message boards. He’s coming all the way from Ontario (home province of my distinguished blogging partner!). He’s got friends or maybe family (?!) about 100 miles from here. At this time I still don’t know what we’ll be doing, but I’ve given him plenty of options. I’ll tell you all about his visit next time I blog.
