Chinese-American architect I.M. Pei came to prominence following the death of John F. Kennedy in 1963 when he was selected to design the John F. Kennedy Library. His most well-known designs include the new central entrance to the Louvre in Paris (the famous pyramid) and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.
After winning the Pritzker Prize (architecture’s equivalent to the Nobel) in 1983, Pei used his $100,000 prize to start a scholarship for Chinese architecture students to study in the United States—provided that the students practice in China afterward.
