The Copley Medal is the oldest still-awarded scientific medal in the world, and was first awarded in 1731 by the Royal Society (whose full name is The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge); the Royal Society is the national scientific institution of the United Kingdom. The Copley Medal has been awarded every year since 1834 to a distinguished scientist.
In a tie-in back to a Final Jeopardy! from last season, Jocelyn Bell Burnell became only the 2nd woman ever to receive the Copley Medal, when she did so in 2021 for her astronomical work, chiefly the discovery of pulsars (if you remember from my write-up last season about pulsars, only her male advisors received the 1974 Nobel Prize for her discovery.)

- As someone who’s been battling a lot of gastrointestinal pain over the past two months—today included—I was greatly amused by the SHORTZ $800 correct response being “stomachache”; yes, I did get it correct.
