For the last 4 games, we’ve had a new champion on Jeopardy!, with Shannon Crisenbery taking home $38,400 as a result of her victory yesterday. Today, she faces off against Tristan Williams of Nebraska and Lauren Black of San Jose.

Due to its strategic location on the Black Sea, the Crimean peninsula has been fought over and changed hands numerous times over the millennia. The Greeks settled the area near what is now Sevastopol in the 6^th century B.C, while in the 19^th century, the Russians fought against an alliance of the Ottomans and Western European states for control in the famous Crimean War. By the time of the Russian Revolution, the area declared independence in 1917 as the Crimean People’s Republic, before becoming the Crimean Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republic in 1945. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, the government in the area asserted sovereignty, and since 2014, the area has been disputed between Ukraine and Russia, with Russia using the area to launch its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

I’ll be honest: it feels like there are a lot of moving parts to this clue, and I’ll be impressed with any contestant who can get through all of them to reach a correct response.

Andy’s Thoughts:

• I like to tell this story sometimes. I was once directing a Scrabble tournament in a board game store; at the same time, a Magic: The Gathering tournament was taking place in another spot in the store. During the tournament at one point, I wandered over to the Magic side and wondered if Magic was a game worth taking up. My friend—who I believe is a Premier Judge—as well as multiple competitors in the event all told me nearly in unison that the game was such a time and wallet sink that I absolutely should avoid the game.
• I do think finding Daily Doubles back-to-back is noteworthy, but I don’t think it’s worth tracking from a “records” point of view, especially as contestants in general get better at hunting for them. Remember, as certain clues are written and selected to be Daily Doubles, I believe that changing Daily Double placement to be a purely random selection on the board would result in a game board that would feel less cohesive overall and would make for a worse television show. I should also note that making Daily Double placement purely random would likely increase variance, would lead to fewer long-running champions, and overall lower ratings for the show.
