Eugene Shoemaker, along with his wife Carolyn Shoemaker and David Levy, discovered the comet known as Shoemaker–Levy 9; a comet whose impact with Jupiter was televised worldwide in 1994. While visiting an impact crater site in Australia in 1997, Shoemaker was killed in a car accident; some of his ashes were taken to the Moon with the Lunar Prospector mission.
