Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Sports & The Movies) for Wednesday, May 31, 2023 (Season 39, Game 188):

A Geena Davis Institute study found shortly after a 2012 franchise film’s release, women’s participation in this sport rose 105%

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Lisa Gargiulo, a middle school English teacher from Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania

Lisa Gargiulo on Jeopardy!

Kyle Marshall, a library branch manager from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Kyle Marshall on Jeopardy!

Ilhana Redzovic, an investment associate from Chicago, Illinois (1-day total: $20,400)

Ilhana Redzovic on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Yesterday’s game saw a new champion, as Chicago’s Ilhana Redzovic won over $20,000. Today, Ilhana faces off against Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania’s Lisa Gargiulo and Edmonton, Alberta’s Kyle Marshall. I’ve mentioned this recently, but I’ll definitely mention it again: I am very happy to see more Canadians on Jeopardy! (as a preview for Friday, Toronto’s Sylvia Izzo Hunter is a challenger) and I definitely believe this increased geographical diversity amongst contestants is a direct result of the significantly reduced barrier to entry that the Jeopardy! Anytime Test has provided.

I’m also quite happy that the Jeopardy! website has returned to fully operational status.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

More information about Final Jeopardy:

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2023 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

As a result of a pair of 2012 films, The Hunger Games and Brave (though the clue today in Final Jeopardy only mentioned the former), the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media found that women’s participation in archery increased 105% between 2012 and 2014. The Hunger Games franchise features Katniss Everdeen as a strong archer, while Pixar’s Brave also features archery prominently, with Princess Merida being very strong with a bow and arrow.

Media outlets covering the 2012 Olympics also noted that The Hunger Games had a massive effect on TV ratings, with The Hollywood Reporter even referring to archery as “the new curling”.

An interesting aside to this is that even the fact that the Geena Davis Institute itself published this study could be construed as a clue to someone who knows enough about Geena Davis; she nearly qualified for the 2000 U.S. Olympic team in archery.

Andy’s Thoughts:

  • The show has reiterated this numerous times: when there is any question as to what a contestant said, they will go to the tape to confirm. It’s clear that the show’s judges believed that Kyle did in fact say “Intranet” on 8-LETTER WORDS $1000.

  • Today’s box score: May 31, 2023 Box Score.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Ilhana $10,400 Kyle $10,200 Lisa $4,600)

Ilhana: Standard cover bet over Kyle is $10,001. (Actual bet: $0)

Kyle: I’d bet between $401 (thereby defending against Ilhana’s low range) and $999 (keeping Lisa locked out). (Actual bet: $9,800)

Lisa: Limit your bet to $4,199; this stays ahead of Ilhana’s cover bet. (Actual bet: $4,599)
