The 1962 World’s Fair (officially titled the Century 21 Exposition), held from April 21-October 21, 1962 in Seattle, Washington, had the theme “Man in the Space Age”; it was also designed to show that the United States wasn’t as behind the Soviet Union in the Space Race as was perceived. The fair was originally conceived in 1955 to be held in 1959 (to mark the 50th anniversary of their 1909 fair), but it was quickly found to be too ambitious of a timeline, and it was pushed back to 1962; with the Space Race in full swing, the themes of space and science completely replaced the earlier thoughts of a festival celebrating the American West. The Space Needle in Seattle is the most lasting and iconic symbol of the fair.
