Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

After a strong opening round, Quentin Powers is your new Jeopardy! champion. Today, he faces off in his title defense against Aahil Makhani of Birmingham and Nannono Zirimu of Albany. Quentin’s buzzer acumen dropped off during Double Jeopardy yesterday; his score today might be dependent on how well that part of his game goes for him today.

It also appears as though Quentin will use important years to him as “lucky numbers” to bet; apparently, he’s a Borussia Dortmund fan, having wagered their founding year of 1909 yesterday. We’ll see if he sticks to 1909 today or introduces new numbers into his wagering arsenal.

Today’s game also features a category presented by Oscar the Grouch. I’m looking forward to it already!

John Milton, best known today for Paradise Lost—his adaptation of the part of the Book of Genesis dealing with the fall of man (the temptation of Adam and Eve by Satan and their removal from the Garden of Eden)—was buried at St. Giles-without-Cripplegate on his death in the 17^th century. His burial site includes a snake holding an apple as a reference to the snake in the Book of Genesis tempting Adam and Eve with that “forbidden fruit”.

Once I realized that the apple was a reference to Paradise Lost, this felt like a relatively straightforward Final for me; one other response I had considered was Isaac Newton, where an apple falling from the tree inspired Newton’s research into gravity.

Game Recap:

Despite not remembering The Alamo, putting him in a -$2,000 hole early, Quentin Powers rebounded to take a good lead entering Final Jeopardy despite a second Daily Double miss in Double Jeopardy.

While Final Jeopardy was a Triple Stumper, Quentin’s large (but not insurmountable) lead entering Final was enough to insulate him and he’s now a 2-day champion. He’ll go for win #3 tomorrow.

Andy’s Thoughts:

• I assume Quentin’s Final Jeopardy wager of $2,002 is a reference to Timor-Leste’s year of independence.

• Texas A&M’s website itself says “Howdy”, not “Gig ‘Em”, is the school’s “official greeting”, automatically rendering any other response incorrect.

• Is it just me, or does Oscar the Grouch sound like half of r/Jeopardy?
