Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Margaret Shelton ended the 4-day run of Christine Whelchel yesterday after a very conservative Final Jeopardy! wager. It might make things difficult on her to defend her title, especially if she decides not to make the standard cover bet again. I know that if I were playing Margaret at this point, I would bet everything if I was in a similar position to yesterday. Christie Baugher and Ujal Thakor are your challengers; Ujal is the first contestant since Lethbridge, Alberta’s Sharon Lawson, who won 1 game in April 2020, to be living in Canada for their appearance. (every Canadian since was introduced as “originally from” due to the increase in Californians due to COVID).
PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they are able to, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s design of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, located on 5th Avenue in New York City, was controversial in the art world upon its 1959 opening, as its centerpiece was a multifloor ramp gallery. The artists were upset at the fact that there was going to be no reference line along the 3% grade ramp; thus, they felt their paintings would be hung askew.

Ujal got off to a quick start, including picking up $1000 on the Daily Double on Clue 3; meanwhile, Christie struggled in the opening 15 clues, picking up 3 incorrect responses (including responding “Kentucky Derby” to a clue about the Indianapolis 500—a Triple Stumper that hurt my motorsport-loving heart.)
Coming out of the break, Christie rebounded well, buoyed by going 4/5 in COMPLETE THE OPERA TITLE; Margaret and Ujal also had strong second half of the rounds, but Margaret held the lead after Single Jeopardy.
Double Jeopardy! Round categories: Famous Peres, Road Trip, Her Emmy-Winning Role, Acronyms, Books Within Books, “M”edicine
The Daily Doubles came out late, with Margaret splitting them both for a net $0. Margaret was in a position to bet for a runaway on the final Daily Double with 3 clues left, but went more conservative. (Which, as it turns out, was a good thing as she didn’t get the clue correct). There were only 4 incorrect responses and 3 Triple Stumpers in Double Jeopardy!, which led to strong scores today, going into Final.
In Final Jeopardy!, we had a triple-get Final for the second consecutive day. For the second consecutive day, Margaret didn’t bet to cover, and is now a two-day champion, as Ujal didn’t best take advantage of the situation.

- It’s really important to pay attention to what the leader’s betting propensity is if you know it.
Unlike some readers in OQL UK, Ken was very much correct not to prompt for more information on Law and Order when the correct response was Law and Order: SVU.
Final Jeopardy! betting suggestions:
Margaret: $9,401. It’s really important to bet to cover today, as you’ve given your opponents occasion to go all-in by not your having done so yesterday. (Had you not failed to cover yesterday, between $0 and $599 would be viable if you thought Ujal was going to bet small, because today’s game is between two-thirds and three-quarters.)
Christie: The only way you can win is if you’re right and Margaret’s wrong. Go with a minimum of $7,598 to maximize your winnings.
