As Edgar Allen Poe wrote in 1846’s The Philosophy of Composition, especially regarding the famed repetition of “Nevermore” in his incredibly famous poem “The Raven”:
In observing the difficulty which I had at once found in inventing a sufficiently plausible reason for its continuous repetition, I did not fail to perceive that this difficulty arose solely from the preassumption that the word was to be so continuously or monotonously spoken by a human being—I did not fail to perceive, in short, that the difficulty lay in the reconciliation of this monotony with the exercise of reason on the part of the creature repeating the word. Here, then, immediately arose the idea of a non-reasoning creature capable of speech, and very naturally, a parrot, in the first instance, suggested itself, but was superseded forthwith by a Raven as equally capable of speech, and infinitely more in keeping with the intended tone.
Quite frankly, Poe is very right. “The Parrot” undoubtedly would not have had the same tone as “The Raven”.

The beginning of today’s game certainly belonged to Jeff, with him picking up six correct responses before the first break! Unfortunately for our champion, she was unable to get the game’s first Daily Double correct. Coming out of the interviews, Megan had the best back half of the round, coming up with 5 correct responses, but she still sat third after Single Jeopardy!

It seemed that as soon as someone jumped out to a lead, an incorrect response would claw them back to the pack. Sarah got to play both Daily Doubles—she lost $3,000 on the first one and $1,000 on the second (on a wager that I would consider to be $1 too much for what she was trying to do. (Namely, in that situation, one should either bet to stay in the lead, or bet to put the game away outright.) 14 incorrect responses and 12 Triple Stumpers led to the Double Jeopardy! round being cut off immediately after the last Daily Double, with Sarah and Jeff tied for the lead at just $7,000 and Megan at $5,600.
Megan and Jeff were both correct in Final Jeopardy; Jeff bet enough to make sure he covered Megan (though he didn’t go all-in); that means that Megan’s streak has come to an end, and Jeff is now a 1-day champion! He’ll go for win #2 tomorrow.
