Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: One of the beautiful things about Jeopardy! is how an episode can often turn unexpectedly exciting. Last night’s game was prime example of that, as Zoha Khalili went from a distant third to the lead in the span of the last 8 clues of Double Jeopardy—only to miss Final and make Scott Plummer the champion. Scott defends his title today against Ben Sloat and Emma Saltzberg.
Meanwhile, we are less than a week from the start of the prime time (on ABC) National College Championship, and the community is still begging ABC to release more promotional materials, namely, the names of all of the competing contestants and the actual format of the event.

Correct response: Who is Garry Kasparov? (or Bruce Pandolfini—see below for my thoughts as to why)

Having looked at a credit roll this morning for The Queen’s Gambit (as I’m always about trying to find primary sources as much as I can), there are two people credited as “Special Consultant”. I have to assume that the show is looking for Garry Kasparov here, as he is the more famous name—having battled IBM’s Deep Blue in the 1990s—but noted American chess teacher Bruce Pandolfini was the chess consultant for Walter Tevis, who wrote the 1983 novel that the Netflix series is based on—and Pandolfini also received Special Consultant credit on The Queen’s Gambit. There are certainly plenty of extra characters available—it would have been incredibly easy to pin this clue further by stating “grandmaster”, or “former World Champion”—titles that were held by Kasparov and not Pandolfini. The best case scenario is that the show receives a significant amount of unnecessary viewer feedback from those wondering why there may have been two possible correct responses here.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- It is getting infuriating watching multiple hosts fail to prompt contestants to be more specific when there are multiple people in the same field with the same last name. There are multiple Harrison presidents (much like with Johnson, Bush, and Adams). There are multiple Manning NFL quarterbacks. There are multiple famous actors last name Hoffman and Wahlberg. All of those—and others—need to be prompted. If this means that the writers need to be proactive about this and place prompts on the host’s sheet, then I guess that means they have to do a little bit more work. But this accepting of responses that absolutely should be prompted needs to be changed. (I would like to be clear, this is not Mayim’s fault, nor is it Ken’s. This is on the writers.)
- Ben’s Final Jeopardy! wager was less than ideal, as it ultimately gave him zero chance of winning the game (and cost him $1,000).
