Phi Beta Kappa is the USA’s oldest academic and most prestigious honor society. With 286 chapters throughout the United States, the top 10% of its member schools’ Arts and Sciences graduates are invited to join.
It was founded at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1776 as a society similar to other secret societies (some of which still exist at some American universities). It expanded with chapters at Yale, Harvard, and Dartmouth prior to the Revolutionary War temporary shuttering of William & Mary. It became an “open” society in the 1830s after the Harvard chapter, during a period of anti-Masonic sentiment, publicly disclused the society’s secrets. Today, ΦΒΚ is seen as the one of the originators of the modern fraternity and sorority system in the United States, though the rise of other “social” fraternities saw ΦΒΚ transform into the honor society it is today in order to differentiate itself.
Since Alex Trebek’s diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, many community members have been raising money. The Jeopardy! Fan Online Store is as well! All proceeds from any “Keep The Faith And We’ll Win” shirt sold will be donated to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. To date, over $440 has been raised.)
