Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Hollywood History) for Wednesday, April 26, 2023 (Season 39, Game 163):

Last name of 3 men who missed the 1927 premiere of “The Jazz Singer” because a 4th of that name had died hours before

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Jesse Matheny, a customer success implementation manager originally from Huntington, Indiana

Jesse Matheny on Jeopardy!

Liz Everhart, a subrogation analyst & science teacher from Louisville, Kentucky

Liz Everhart on Jeopardy!

Johanna Stoberock, a fiction writer & adjunct professor from Walla Walla, Washington (1-day total: $6,999)

Johanna Stoberock on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Last night’s Jeopardy! saw Johanna Stoberock win just $6,999—but she gets to play again, and that’s the more important prize. Today’s challengers are Jesse Matheny & Liz Everhart.

We’re less than two weeks from the start of Jeopardy! Masters and the hinted-at gameplay tweaks have still yet to be announced publicly by anyone. I beg the show to let the viewers know in advance. So much of the show’s audience has difficulty with change and does not like surprises—please, give your audience a chance to digest the changes before they air.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Sam Warner, who obtained the technology for the Warner Brothers movie studio to be able to put sound and video on one film (Vitaphone) that led to the production of the groundbreaking 1927 film The Jazz Singer, died of pneumonia the night before the film’s premiere; his three brothers returned to California from New York for Sam’s funeral. However, the premiere was a rousing success, with Robert E. Sherwood of Life magazine writing “I for one suddenly realized that the end of the silent drama is in sight”. The success of the film revitalized the Warner Brothers studio.

Final Jeopardy! wagering suggestions:

(Scores: Johanna $12,000 Liz $11,000 Jesse $10,800)

Johanna: Standard cover bet over Johanna is $10,001. (Actual bet: $10,001)

Liz: You can’t both cover Jesse and win a Double Stumper with Johanna. Either make the cover bet—$10,601—or bet no more than $199, forcing Jesse to at least be correct to bet you. ((Actual bet: $10,000)

Jesse: Limit your bet to $8,799 in order to stay ahead of Johanna if you both miss Final. (Actual bet: $8,200)
