Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category The 1500s) for Tuesday, October 3, 2023 (Season 40, Game 17):

In the early 1500s he produced a codex in words & pictures on the flight of birds, one of many subjects that interested him

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Greg Marrero, a school administrator from Huntington Beach, California

Greg Marrero on Jeopardy!

Katrina Hill, a program officer from Alexandria, Virginia

Katrina Hill on Jeopardy!

Lawrence Long, a nursing student & stay-at-home uncle from East Bend, North Carolina

Lawrence Long on Jeopardy!

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

On yesterday’s show, Dane Reighard qualified for the semifinals after a Triple Stumper Final Jeopardy clue. Lawrence Long, Katrina Hill, and Greg Marrero return today to the Alex Trebek Stage. Lawrence went viral during his initial appearances, thanks to being introduced as a stay-at-home uncle. In my preview this weekend, I mentioned that this is a game where anything could happen, especially because the strength of her opposition may cloud Katrina’s stats and skill level—she lost in her first title defense to 5-time champion Luigi de Guzman.

One thing to keep in mind this week, especially if you’re in Chicago, but this also could be the case in some other Central Time Zone markets if your local Jeopardy! station is an ABC affiliate: ABC coverage of MLB playoffs is happening today, tomorrow and Thursday, and will very likely preempt Jeopardy!; I hope the new MLB pitch clock rules mean that it would take significant extra innings for the game to run long enough to preempt the show in the Eastern time zone.

Also, in news from the world of Jeopardy!—congratulations to Amy Schneider, whose first book, In the Form of a Question: The Joys and Rewards of a Curious Life, releases today. You can find my review of the book here.

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2023 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Leonardo da Vinci produced Codex on the Flight of Birds in 1505–1506 as part of his interest in human mechanical flight. This contained more than 35,000 words and 500 pictures and sketches of the flight of birds and potential prototypes of flying machines. While the work introduced concepts that would turn into viable human flight, the Wright Brothers took nearly four centuries to successfully fly a plane.

Jeopardy! Round:

In a round which started with an amusing number of video clues in a row, Lawrence found the Daily Double early, and while Greg led after 15 clues, Lawrence picked up 7 correct in the second half of the round to hold a good-sized lead after 30.

Statistics at the first break (15 clues):

Lawrence 5 correct 2 incorrect
Katrina 3 correct 0 incorrect

Today’s interviews:

Double Jeopardy! Round:

(Categories: Literary Biography; 20th Century Fox History; Weave Got Sewing Clues; The Congo River; Men Of Michigan; 4, 4)

Clue #8 proved to be the turning point of this one; Lawrence doubled his score on a Daily Double! Finding the third one a few clues later took any chance of a comeback away from Greg and Katrina. Lawrence had a runaway going into Final!

Statistics after Double Jeopardy:

Lawrence 24 correct 4 incorrect
Greg 12 correct 0 incorrect
Katrina 13 correct 1 incorrect
Total number of unplayed clues this season: 0 (0 today).

Scores going into Final:

Lawrence $22,600
Greg $8,600
Katrina $6,400

Everyone probably could have used 32 seconds for this Final, Katrina to write her shoutout and Lawrence to finish his response! As it turns out, they both made small bets so it was immaterial as to the final outcome. Lawrence is a semifinalist!

Tonight’s results:

Katrina $6,400 – $116 = $6,284 (What is Albert, you’re a rea)
Greg $8,600 + $8,599 = $17,199 (Who Leonardo Da Vinci)
Lawrence $22,600 – $0 = $22,600 (Who is Linnaeus? Da Vin) (Semi-Finalist)
