Our third semifinal today in the Spades bracket of Fall 2023 Champions Wildcard is an interesting one: Lucy Ricketts, top seed in the bracket courtesy of her 3 wins and nearly $80,000 in regular play and who advanced comfortably last Monday, faces off against Joe Feldmann, who advanced due to what he calls his “Slumdog Millionaire” moment in Final Jeopardy in his quarterfinal, and Daniel Nguyen, who bet $0 in Final Jeopardy in his quarterfinal and thus had the opportunity to give a shoutout to a beloved former coworker at his school, Radu Toma, who passed away in 2022. I would still label Lucy as the favorite to advance to the final—she has played as though she’s 100% worthy of the top seed—but as we’ve seen so far, absolutely anything can happen in these matches; any one of these three players could become a finalist.

As appeared in the April 1918 issue of The National Humane Review:
Numerous complaints have been made to the Pigeon Section of the Signal Corps that carrier pigeons of the racing homer type, being trained throughout the United States for communication service with the American Army, have been shot by persons on hunting expeditions.In spite of the fact that many states have laws prohibiting the shooting of pigeons, the killing of these birds by hunters has interfered seriously with the training of homing and carrier pigeons for army service.
Prior to advances in communication technology in the 1950s, carrier pigeons were seen as the most reliable way to transport messages; European armies had been using them since the late 19th century, while the Americans began using pigeons upon their entry into World War I in 1917. Many countries instituted laws during this period to protect their flocks of carrier pigeons: British laws in World War II were even more stringent than American state anti-hunting laws; the British threatened a £100 fine or six months in prison for anyone caught harming a pigeon.
