Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Literature) for Tuesday, July 9, 2024 (Season 40, Game 217):
In one story he is enslaved by the Old Man of the Sea & uses apes to pick fruit so he can afford his fare back to Baghdad
(correct response beneath the contestants)
Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:
Kathy Davis, a chemistry professor from North Manchester, Indiana
Anna Paone, a stay-at-home mom from Sunnyside, New York
Isaac Hirsch, a customer support team lead from Burbank, California (4-day total: $100,586)
Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:
In 1985, Mark Leinwand—who defeated Steve Hirsch—became the 20th player to win 4 games (and only the third to fail to win 5). Yesterday, Steve’s son Isaac became the 459th 4-time champion in the show’s history and is hoping to become 5-time champion #279 today. However, as always, there are two challengers hoping to stop Isaac from victory: Indiana professor Kathy Davis and New York stay-at-home mom Anna Paone.

Correct response: Who is Sinbad?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2024 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)
Sinbad the Sailor is a fictional sailor from Baghdad whose stories appear in some versions of the One Thousand and One Nights stories; generally, in the stories, he took seven voyages to different parts of the world. The story mentioned in today’s Final Jeopardy is from Sinbad’s fifth voyage.
In terms of how straightforward I think today’s clue is, as long as one recognizes Baghdad as the major clue here, and doesn’t see “Old Man of the Sea” and think Hemingway instead, players in studio and at home alike should not have too much difficulty landing on a correct response.

- Isaac’s $120,187 is 108th all time in terms of adjusted 5-day totals.
- Today’s box score will be linked to when posted by the show.

(Scores: Isaac $19,400 Anna $9,800 Kathy $3,800)
Isaac: Standard cover bet over Anna is $201. (Actual bet: $201)
Anna: To have any chance of winning today you have to bet at least $9,400. (Actual bet: $1,201)
Kathy: Bet no more than $3,400 here. However, I’d bet $0 and hope for Anna to get Final incorrect. (Actual bet: $0)
