After Mira Hayward became the first semifinalist of this group in yesterday’s game, I am expecting to see a great battle in this one. Deb Bilodeau may have been just a 1-day champion, but their statistics are excellent, and I expect them to give Matt Harvey—who advanced into this competition via Second Chance—a spirited battle. Of course, this is an era where, at this level of play, everyone generally has between a 20 and 50% chance of winning; Crystal Zhao is just as capable of being able to pull off an upset in this one!

Correct response: What is Kurtz?

Kurtz is the central character of Joseph Conrad’s famous work Heart of Darkness; he is an ivory trader sent into the Congo in Africa. One important point here is that while a lot of sources cite 1899 as the publication of Heart of Darkness, that was when the work was first serialized. It was published in book form in 1902—hence why you see the year 1902 in the clue today.

While Kurtz from Heart of Darkness certainly served as the inspiration for the character Colonel Kurtz from the 1979 movie Apocalypse Now, I hope that none of our players give this Kurtz a commission; I can’t see that ending well for the player.
