Today’s quarterfinal in the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament is an intriguing matchup: a pair of superchampions in Ray Lalonde and Ryan Long are facing off against the 2000 Tournament of Champions winner in Robin Carroll. The Unified Prediction Model does have Robin as a favorite in this matchup—she has plenty of experience already at this level—but as we’ve seen in the tournament thus far, absolutely anything can happen.

I would also like to reiterate something that I said last night on social media after listening to Inside Jeopardy. Michael Davies said yesterday, “One thing I don’t take seriously, and one thing I don’t take lightly or kindly is the abuse over choices of contestants we put on this television program.” It appears to me that hateful people are taking cues from certain so-called “leaders” in this world and hurling abuse at Jeopardy! for bringing a diverse set of strong contestants on to the program. And I am very afraid that this sort of invective is going to drive a very strong producer away from this project and towards other projects. Because who needs this sort of abuse? If Michael Davies does choose to leave—and as I’ve said, I am very afraid that he will at this point—I don’t know if many potential successors would be capable of maintaining the momentum that Michael Davies has brought to the show. Although things have not been perfect, and there have certainly been some bumps along the way, the overall health of the show, in my opinion, has improved significantly since the departure of Mike Richards. So, if Michael Davies does leave at this point, he will have left the show in a better condition than he found it—but I also think that him choosing to stay will result in better outcomes overall for Jeopardy!.

The ongoing disputes surrounding the island of Cyprus led to time-related confusion in the capital of Nicosia in 2016. When Turkey decided to stay on summer time year-round in 2016, Northern Cyprus—currently only recognized by Turkey–announced that it would be following Ankara’s lead regarding time zones. This meant that Nicosia, the capital, had half of its territory on UTC+3 and half on UTC+2, leading to large amounts of confusion, especially when GPS-enabled cellular phones got confused and displayed the wrong time zone for users.

However—and I wish the clue today had mentioned this—by the autumn of 2017 the island was once again on a unified time zone. I should say that technically the clue is correct as worded, “began” is a correct statement—though I would imagine that some will claim the fact that the show didn’t say it has ended will mislead viewers. I feel as though “briefly followed” might have been a better choice of wording here.
