We may have lost Alex, but the show must go on. Alex wouldn’t want it any other way. Please, let’s remember him over the next six weeks of banked episodes, and then afford him the same respect to his successors that we afforded Alex when he replaced Art Fleming in 1984.

Today’s contestants:

Tuan Nguyen, an engineer originally from Pomona, California

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to abide by physical distancing guidelines and when you are not able to do so, properly wear a mask. Ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

Correct response: What is the Saint Bernard?

More information about Final Jeopardy: (The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2020 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

Saint Bernard dogs are most famously associated with Archdeacon Bernard de Menthon’s hospice, which was founded in the 11th century as a hostel for travelers along Switzerland’s alpine border with Italy. The most famous historical Saint Bernard dog, named Barry, was said to have rescued forty travelers during his life between 1800 and 1814. Prior to that, it had been discovered that the dogs were excellent pathfinders in the drifting snow of the Alps and the Saint Bernard Pass, in addition to the sense of smell that was able to locate stranded travelers.

The name “Alpendog” was suggested in the 1820s in Germany; the name “Saint Bernard” was first used by Daniel Wilson in 1833. However, the breed was not officially named that until 1880.
