After a Final Jeopardy ruling in yesterday’s game that I still believe was 100% correct—after all, as another recapper put it yesterday, a fruit in the title of a John Steinbeck work could be “grape” as well as “grapes”—Evan Dorey, whose grandfather hails from Newfoundland, is your returning champion. Today, he faces off against a retired dentist in Steve Czekala and a former 401k processor in Stephanie Asalone.

In the battle between the AFL and NFL in the mid-1960s, the two football leagues were still trying to pre-empt each other into new markets. In order to prevent the AFL from putting a team in Atlanta in 1966, the NFL partially pushed up its expansion plans by a year to put a team in Georgia. Needing a second expansion team to prevent an uneven number of teams, it was eventually decided to place an expansion team in New Orleans. While the franchise had been technically awarded a week prior, then-NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle was convinced to delay the official announcement of the New Orleans Saints until November 1, so as to coincide with All Saints Day.

As a sports fan, I found this to be a relatively straightforward clue. However, I also would not be surprised for this to be a category that causes some more unorthodox Final Jeopardy wagers—even though the general community consensus on this point is, based on the last two decades’ worth of data, is that the category name is often a red herring as to the subject of the clue and should usually be disregarded when discussing potential Final Jeopardy strategy. (And, to that point, I didn’t particularly appreciate the shade thrown a couple of weeks ago on Inside Jeopardy—I simply want to give prospective players advice on how to increase their chances of winning, and we as a community should not be discouraging that.)
