As many who played LearnedLeague last fall learned, the famous Jacuzzi hydrotherapy pump was first invented in 1948 for Ken Jacuzzi—the son of inventor Candido Jacuzzi—who was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis; the family wanted to be able to treat arthritis between hospital visits. Patented four years later, it began being marketed as a portable device that could turn a regular bathtub into a therapeutic spa. Jacuzzi’s first whirlpool bath was first produced in the late 1960s and became popular first in California, then the entire United States. Today, many use the name Jacuzzi to refer to any whirlpool bath, much to the company’s consternation (as what happens in the case of many trademarks that suffer from being genericized.)

The wording of the LearnedLeague question, from November 11, 2022, read: “Name the Italian engineer and inventor, born in 1903, whose name lives on today via the hydrotherapeutic pump he developed to alleviate the arthritis pain suffered by his infant son.” I just find it curious that this question came up on Jeopardy! a scant two months after it showed up in LearnedLeague. (This week’s games were taped on January 11.)
