Correct response: What is Silent Spring?

In the dedication to Silent Spring, Rachel Carson wrote, “Man has lost the capacity to foresee and to forestall. He will end by destroying the Earth”—words that were part of a letter from Albert Schweitzer to a beekeeper about to lose his colony to pesticides. The book brought the environmental movement further into public consciousness—but it could definitely be said that mankind still definitely lacks the capacity to foresee and forestall global warming.

Katie continued early on with her strategy of “don’t be wrong”; she got the first three clues tonight (including the first Daily Double)—but failed to ring in after that until after the interviews. I’ll be very curious to see her attempt statistics tonight, as I suspect she’s choosing not to take enough chances. (That being said, “Don’t be wrong” isn’t a terrible strategy.)
As you can probably tell, I write these in real time as the episode moves along: Katie took her first two incorrect responses of her Jeopardy! career on clues 18 and 20 of the Jeopardy! round. She did rebound from those to only be behind by $600 after Single Jeopardy!, with the aptly-named-for-today Finn holding the lead and Joel picking first in the second round.
Double Jeopardy! Round categories: Let’s Have a Confluence; Movie & TV Role In Common; Throwing Shade; History Quick Takes; Chemical People; “X”s & “O”s
Finn found both Daily Doubles in Double Jeopardy, but unfortunately for him, he dropped both of them. He also didn’t find the last one until very late in the round, and it very nearly cost him the lead going into Final, but he rebounded well by picking up the $2,000 clue to retake the lead at the end-of-round signal. Going into Final, the scores saw Finn at $10,800, Katie at $9,800, and Joel at $2,400.
Final Jeopardy! saw Katie and Finn getting the clue correct, and Finn bet enough to become Jeopardy! champion! I will say, though, that Joel will very likely be seen as a very memorable contestant.

- Thank you to WRDW in Augusta, Georgia for sticking with its published schedule—unlike WNEM in Flint, Michigan.
- Being that contestants, on average, do better on Daily Doubles than they do in Final Jeopardy!, Finn’s chances of winning would have been higher had he went all-in on the last Daily Double (playing for the runaway) instead of trying to hold a slim lead going in Final. (Interestingly, Finn’s strategy did work out better today for him than what I would have suggested, but just because something worked in this case doesn’t make it the best strategy in general.)
- Kudos to all three players for excellent betting in Final Jeopardy! today.
