Damn the Torpedoes was Floridian Tom Petty’s third studio album; its best-known songs from the album would be “Refugee” and “Don’t Do Me Like That”. The 1979 album reached #2 on the Billboard 200 (only kept from the top spot by Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall) and was certified 3× Platinum by the RIAA. The album gets its title from Admiral David Farragut’s famous quote from the August 1864 Battle of Mobile Bay, when Farragut ordered “”Damn the torpedoes! Four bells. Captain Drayton, go ahead! Jouett, full speed!”—a quote which became paraphrased as Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!”

Our Canadian challenger got off to the best start, getting 7 correct and $5,000 before the first commercial break! However, both Jeff and Andrew battled back in the back half of Single Jeopardy, with Jeff picking up a True Daily Double on clue #17! It was a very tight game after 30 clues!

Jeff found both Daily Doubles in Double Jeopardy! as well. The first one—on clue #2—didn’t go well. In between, it was still a very close game, with all three players within $3,400 late in the game. Then, Jeff got to play the last Daily Double. Behind by $2,000, Jeff chose to go aggressive with a shocking True Daily Double wager! This worked out perfectly for him, as he got the correct response, and ended up breaking today’s game wide open! Scores going into Final were Jeff holding a commanding lead at $20,000, Andrew in second at $11,000, and Whitney in third and functionally out of contention at $7,600.
Final today was a Triple Stumper, which meant that Jeff’s strong position going into Final worked perfectly for him! He’s now a 2-day champion, going for win #3 tomorrow!
