In his “Notes on the State of Virginia”, Thomas Jefferson wrote, “The Ohio is the most beautiful river on earth. Its current gentle, waters clear, and bosom smooth, and unbroken by rocks and rapids, a single instance only excepted.” Running from Pittsburgh in the northeast to the Mississippi River at Cairo, IL in the southwest, it served as the northwestern border of colonial Virginia; since then, both Kentucky and West Virginia have been carved out of Virginia territory, taking the state’s claim to the Ohio River with it.
