Andy’s Pregame Thoughts: Today is Quarterfinal #4, and at the end of today we’ll know three more semifinalists: the four quarterfinal winners automatically qualify, and the top 2 wildcards will also have clinched their spot at the end of today’s game. Currently, those spots are held by Katie Reed and Hester Blum.
One thing that I’ve known for awhile but isn’t always apparent to newer viewers: In tournament play, contestants are sequestered for the quarterfinals until they have played their quarterfinal match. Contestants have no idea what scores have come before them in this tournament. (They are able to watch the quarterfinals after theirs, though.)

The St. Lawrence Seaway is a series of locks and channels that was built in the 1950s to permit ships to travel from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to Duluth, Minnesota, on the western edge of Lake Superior. It includes the Welland Canal, which very famously bypasses Niagara Falls. At the time, it was the largest waterway and hydro dam project ever undertaken by two nations, leading it to be dubbed “The Greatest Construction Show on Earth”. (The Cecil B. DeMille film The Greatest Show on Earth had been released two years before construction began on the Seaway.)
