Correct response: Who is George Armstrong Custer?

Mark Kellogg was writing for the Bismarck Tribune (and the Associated Press) alongside George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn (an 1876 military engagement in Montana against the Lakota, Dakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho) when Custer’s forces suffered an overwhelming defeat. Custer and Kellogg were both killed in the engagement; Kellogg is seen today as the first Associated Press journalist to be killed in the line of duty.
As someone who has watched a lot of Jeopardy! over the years, the date in late June of 1876 should immediately point you in the direction of the Battle of the Little Bighorn; from there, it’s a quick matter of ascertaining what the clue in this case wants (in this case, “this man” points you in the direction of Custer.)
