Jamie Ding came incredibly close to winning $100,000 on yesterday’s Jeopardy!, with only an incorrect response on the game’s final clue preventing Jamie from reaching that threshold. His performances are increasingly on the level of players like Amy Schneider, Matt Amodio, James Holzhauer, and Ken Jennings, with Jamie showing that records previously thought untouchable are still absolutely within reach. Jamie’s secret right now is his impeccable buzzer timing—when he can get in over 30 times, it’s going to be a rout. Yesterday was his best game to date in terms of timing itself, per the show’s box scores—Jamie got in on an incredible 40 of his 45 attempts. Today, Jamie faces off against Nikki Svetov and Brian Chu, with a lot at stake—a win today will allow for Jamie to pass Harrison Whitaker in the Tournament of Champions tracker, crucial for Jamie’s ToC chances later, as it would just about guarantee a bye to the semifinals.

As I said back in January 2020:
The Dreyfus Affair (and the related Émile Zola letterJ’Accuse!) is one ofJeopardy!‘s favorite topics to bring up in Final Jeopardy… during a bout of French antisemitism in the 1890s, Alfred Dreyfus was accused of providing military secrets to the Germans (although the actual guilty party was Major Ferdinand Walsin-Esterhazy.) He was found guilty of treason in a secret court-martial in 1894, stripped of his rank, and sent to life imprisonment on Devil’s Island (part of French Guiana). In order to force the evidence against Dreyfus to be made public, Zola elected to have himself accused of libel. Dreyfus eventually accepted a pardon but was not completely declared innocent by the French Army until the 1990s, even though a French civilian court set aside the treason judgment in 1906.
There’s been a current events update to the Dreyfus affair, though: in November, France finally took the step to posthumously promote Dreyfus to brigadier general.
To anyone who has watched the show regularly, this should be a slam-dunk Final Jeopardy, as it is an extremely canonical topic for the show.

Jamie Ding started slowly but finished very well, getting 43 of the final 53 clues correct, with his only blemish after the opening clue being a loss of a record $21,200 on the game’s final Daily Double. That didn’t prevent him from entering Final Jeopardy with an extremely dominant runaway.
Jamie put the exclamation point on this one with a correct response in Final Jeopardy, bringing his score for the day over $50,000—but had Jamie gotten the last Daily Double correct, we might have seen a new one-day record today.

Andy’s Thoughts:
- When it comes to geographic pronunciations, I would contend that Jamie’s pronunciation of “Newfoundland” is worse than his pronunciation of “Minsk”–even moreso considering that the pronunciation on Wikipedia of Minsk does have a hint of it sounding like “Mingsk”.
- The previous record for “largest incorrect Daily Double wager” is $15,600, actually set by Alex Jacob during the All-Star Games on March 1, 2019. (Due to technical reasons surrounding the entry of the All-Star Games, J! Archive attributes that wager to the wrong player.)
