Correct response: Who is Buddha?
More information about Final Jeopardy: (N.B.: Please read this before commenting about the substance of today’s clue.)
There are a couple of versions of Chinese folklore that lead to why the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac is as it is. The one referenced in the clue above says that Buddha summoned all the animals to come to him before he departed to say farewell, and only the 12 animals of the current Zodiac arrived to do so. As a reward, he named a year after each animal in the order they arrived (Rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig).
Another version is that the Jade Emperor held a competition amongst all of the animals, with only the 12 fittest animals surviving. Of course, that doesn’t strictly fit the “only 12 came” part of today’s Final Jeopardy.
