Norwegian Axel Paulsen is a famous skater who excelled in both figure skating and speed skating in the late 19th century. He is best known today for inventing the jump known as the “Axel”, which was named for him. The Axel is the most technically difficult jump in figure skating due to its forward takeoff and extra half-rotation needed due to the takeoff.
Paulsen was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1976.
