The 2016 election saw Donald Trump (New York) get elected against Hillary Clinton (New York). Prior to 2016, the most recent occurrence was 1944 (also New York, with Franklin Roosevelt defeating Thomas E. Dewey). Others include 1920 (Warren G. Harding v. James M. Cox of Ohio), 1904 (Theodore Roosevelt vs. Alton B. Parker of New York), and 1860 (Abraham Lincoln vs. Stephen Douglas of Illinois).
Here at TJF, I would say that the key to getting this clue correct is knowing (or remembering) that Hillary Clinton was a New York resident (as opposed to Arkansas or Illinois), as she represented New York in the Senate from 2001 to 2009.
