Correct response: What is One Thousand and One Nights (or Arabian Nights)?

The framing of the stories in One Thousand and One Nights is that the ruler Shahryār, upset at his first wife being unfaithful, decides all women are the same and marries many of them, only to have them executed the morning after the marriage. Eventually, with the vizir running out of suitable women for Shahryār, Scheherazade (the vizir’s daughter) volunteers as a bride; however, after the wedding, she begins to tell a story to Shahryār, only for her to leave it unfinished until the next morning, in the hopes that Shahryār would rather hear the end of the story than kill the storyteller. Eventually, Scheherazade’s life is spared.
The first European version was translated by Antoine Galland c.1704; the first English-language edition gave the title of The Arabian Nights’ Entertainment and was published between c.1706-1721. An earlier Syrian manuscript with about 300 tales can be seen at the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris.
