Said to be based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, Daniel Defoe’s “The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself, with An Account how he was at last as strangely delivered by pirates” (Defoe’s titles are well-known for containing a synopsis as their full title, much like Moll Flanders — good luck writing that down in 30 seconds!) is a famous work of 18th century English literature and has been credited in some parts as the first English novel. Selkirk was a Scottish castaway who spent four years on a Pacific island called “Más a Tierra” (now part of Chile); Crusoe spent seven times that long.

The first edition also credited Crusoe as the author, leading many to believe that the story was not fiction, but fact.
