Mar-A-Lago was built in the 1920s by Marjorie Post, who was the heiress to General Foods, Inc. at the time. Upon her death in 1973, it was bequeathed to the United States Government; however, because it was in the flight path to Palm Beach Airport, it was considered too difficult to secure the facility and the government returned it to the Post Foundation in 1981. It was purchased by Donald Trump in 1985.
