Mary I, fourth of five English Tudor monarchs, became Queen after successfully deposing Lady Jane Grey. Being Catholic, she became known as Bloody Mary due to her passing of a strict heresy law that resulted in over 300 Protestants being burned as heretics. Desperate to avoid her Protestant half-sister Elizabeth being her successor, she married Philip II of Spain in 1554, which resulted in the aforementioned titles being added. The marriage was childless, and to add insult to injury, the alliance with Spain upset the French, and it ultimately cost England the last of its European continental possessions (Calais). Mary died in 1558, and Elizabeth I succeeded her.
