The city, founded as Saint Petersburg by Peter the Great in 1703, was renamed to Petrograd in 1914, Leningrad in 1924, and back to Saint Petersburg in 1991. With 5,323,300 residents within the city limits and a latitude of 59 degrees, 56 minutes north, it is the northernmost city with a population of at least 5 million (and, for North American comparison, would be at a latitude very close to the northern border of the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, and is even farther north than Juneau, Alaska!
