The children’s book, titled The World is Round, was published in 1938 by Young Scott Books; Margaret Wise Brown (later of Goodnight Moon and Runaway Bunny fame) was their editor and was soliciting children’s books from famous writers (like Hemingway and Steinbeck, who both declined) for a children’s book that was closer in style to Lucy Sprague Mitchell’s Here and Now Story Book than other children’s offerings at the time; Mitchell’s work was more direct and showed children how to experience the world, instead of telling them what to do. Stein also insisted the work be published in blue text on rose-pink paper; at one point in the story, the story goes “Nobody’s name was ever Blue, nobody’s why not, Rose never thought about that, Rose thought she thought about a lot but she never did think about that.”
The line itself in the clue alludes to Stein’s famous line from her poem “Sacred Emily”, “Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose”, a line Stein used throughout her life as branding of sorts.
