When I saw this Final Jeopardy! today, I thought it looked more like a regular clue than a Final; it seemed really terse and asking about a thing normally asked in a regular game! (Though, if you think about it, there isn’t a lot of alphanumeric anatomy.)
The C1 vertebrae, also known as “atlas”, is at the very top of the spinal column. It got the name “Atlas” from mythology, as Atlas supported the weight of the world on it. Immediately beneath it is the axis (“C2”); C1 pivots around the C2 axis.
Injuries to C1 and C2 are most severe and are often either fatal or would leave the individual paralyzed.
