Pokémon, one of the best-known video game series of all time, was originally released in Japan in 1996 as Pokémon Red and Green; when it came across to North America in 1998, they became known as Pokémon Red and Blue. Its well-known slogan, “Gotta catch ’em all”, is clearly based on Tajiri’s desire to catch every single insect he could find.
More recently, the series became incredibly well-known in mainstream circles in the summer of 2016 with the release of Niantic’s Pokémon GO app, which used augmented reality to allow users to search for Pokémon and play the game in the real world.
