In 1847, Sir Charles Isham was looking to decorate the large rockery alongside his house, Lamport Hall, in Northampton, England. Gartenzwerge, as they were called at the time, had been growing in fashion through Saxony, Thrungia, and into France, and Isham decided to import 21 of them into England. (The only remaining one of the 21 is nicknamed “Lampy”, which might be of interest to some in the North American quizzing community.) Once they became more popular, the term “Gnomen-Figuren” (miniature figurines) became used in catalogs, which led to the term “garden gnomes”.
Gnomes experienced a resurgence in England in the 1930s after the release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and in the 1990s, the concept of a travelling gnome prank (where someone would kidnap a garden gnome and send photographs of the gnome around the world to the unsuspecting owner) was in vogue; the travelling gnome prank was even a subplot in the 2001 Oscar-nominated French film Amélie.
Since Alex Trebek’s diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, many community members have been raising money. The Jeopardy! Fan Online Store is as well!
